Victim of Armenian vandalism – Ashaghi Govhar agha Mosque

One of the historical and cultural monuments of Shusha is Ashaghi Govhar agha Mosque. With the occupation of Shusha by Armenians in 1992, the Ashaghi Govhar agha Mosque, like all architectural monuments in the city, fell victim to Armenian vandalism and was severely damaged during 28 years.

Ashaghi Govhar agha Mosque, one of the two Juma mosques in Shusha, is mentioned in the city master plan of 1855. The first reconstruction and repair work was carried out in the mosque in 1874-1875. The construction of the mosque in the new format was carried out by the architect Karbalai Shafikhan Garabaghi on the basis of Govhar agha's financial resources, so the building was named after him.

There is a three-arched balcony on the northern facade of the two-story mosque. Its middle arch is curved in contrast to the semicircular side arches, which gives a special beauty to the building. Rising along the main facade over the side arches, this arch is a sign to the front entrance of the mosque.

After the occupation of Shusha, the interior of the mosque was completely destroyed as a result of Armenian vandalism. The prayer hall of the Ashaghi Govhar agha Mosque is covered with a dome and five domes. On the second floor of the mosque, there are balconies for women in the side sections.
